Apartment and Condominium Recycling Programs

Property owners of multi-unit complexes (more than three units) or condominiums in the City of Fort Lauderdale are required to implement a recycling program, provide access to recycling containers and encourage tenants to recycle.  Private solid waste contractors currently provide sanitation services (e.g., garbage, yard waste and bulk trash) to multi-unit complexes and condominiums.  Similarly, a private contractor must also be hired to provide recycling services.

If your complex or business does not have an established recycling program, it is very easy to set one up. Typically, your complex will require two carts for every 20 residential units. Most contractors now provide single-stream recycling that enables all recyclables to be placed together in a single cart. Recyclable materials include newspaper, mixed paper, flattened cardboard, plastic and glass beverage bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans, drink boxes and juice boxes.

Simply talk to the property owner or manager, or condo association board about your interest in recycling. To assist you with this effort, we have provided a list of local private contractors that offer recycling services and a Multi-Family Recycling Implementation Guide that you can use to promote the program. Additional educational materials are available to multi-family properties located within the City upon request.

By establishing recycling at your complex, you will be in compliance with City of Fort Lauderdale Ordinance C-95-36.
