Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking public input on the draft Southeast Florida Regional Climate Action Plan. The plan, which was developed by the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, seeks to unite the entire Southeast Florida region in a collaborative effort to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.
The City of Fort Lauderdale encourages residents and visitors to attend the upcoming Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) meeting to learn about the Regional Climate Action Plan, including its goals, implementation and next steps. The SAB meeting will take place at 6:30 pm on Monday, January 23, 2012 in the 1st floor Commission Chambers of City Hall, which is located at 100 N. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
Citizens that are unable to attend the SAB meeting can review the draft plan online at
www.southeastfloridaclimatecompact.org and submit their comments by sending an email to comments@SoutheastFloridaClimateCompact.org . Public comments will be incorporated into a final plan, which will be presented to the respective Boards of County Commissioners of the participating Compact Counties.
The draft plan, which represents the cumulative effort and expertise of over 100 stakeholders, was released at the Third Annual Southeast Florida Climate Leadership Summit in December 2011. In development for the past two years, the plan has been refined to identify 100 action items to be implemented over a five-year period. Specific elements of the plan include consistent methodologies for mapping sea-level rise impacts, assessing vulnerability and understanding sources of regional greenhouse gas emissions.
The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, which was adopted by Broward County on December 8, 2009, is a joint commitment of Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties to address climate change. The City of Fort Lauderdale is proud to be the only municipality in all four counties to directly participate in the Compact. Assistant City Manager Susanne Torriente represents the City and sits on both the Steering Committee and the Joint Policy Advisory Team.
