Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale is celebrating America Recycles Day early by offering its first Shoe Collection Event on Saturday, November 5. Citizens are invited to participate in the event by bringing pairs of new or “gently worn” shoes (any size) to Stranahan House, located at 335 S.E. 6th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, from 8 a.m. to noon. Collected shoes will be donated to a local charity.

The goal of the Shoe Collection Event, which coincides with the Footsteps for Families Run/Walk, is to emphasize that recycling is not just about reducing waste. It is also about going beyond the “blue bin” to minimize our carbon footprint through actions such as finding other uses for, or repurposing, everyday items.

“Repurposing items is a large component of the recycling loop and one that people may not consider when they think of recycling. By hosting the Shoe Collection Event, the City is encouraging citizens to think outside of the traditional blue bin,” said Loretta Cronk, City Recycling Coordinator.

Citizens who donate new or “gently worn” shoes will get discount coupons to the Museum of Discovery and Science/IMAX Theater and Sports Authority. Footsteps for Families Run/Walk participants who donate shoes are also eligible to win a Bluegreen Resort vacation.

The City of Fort Lauderdale is proud to join its partners, Deliver the Dream, the Museum of Discovery and Science, Riverwalk Trust, and Sports Authority, to offer an event that helps support our neighbors by providing footwear to the community.

America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day and community-driven awareness event dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. Since its inception in 1997, communities across the country have participated in America Recycles Day on November 15 each year to educate, promote environmental citizenship, and encourage action.
