Let the Games Begin at Fort Lauderdale’s 58th Annual David Deal Playday

Fort Lauderdale – The City of Fort Lauderdale Centennial Celebration continues with the 58th Annual David Deal Playday. The series of events begin Tuesday, August 9 through Saturday, August 13, 2011. All events, with the exception of the Championship Swim Meet, will take place at Joseph C. Carter Park, located at 1450 W. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. All Playday events are free and open to the public.

The 58th Annual David Deal Playday event schedule includes:

Teen 3-on-3 and Adult 5-on-5 Basketball Tournaments
Tuesday, August 9 through Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 3:30 to 8 p.m.

Come as a team or make one when you get here! Play some high-energy hoops created especially for the serious ball player.

David Deal Playday Kids Day
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Let the games begin! Olympic sports, novelty competitions, table games and wacky water sports are just a few of the activities planned. Prizes will be awarded all day for the best competitors.

Centennial Plaque Dedication to Honor Joseph Cecil Carter
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 11 a.m.

As part of the 2011 Centennial celebration, a Centennial plaque honoring Joseph C. Carter will be unveiled. Joseph C. Carter arrived in Fort Lauderdale in 1953 to oversee Sunland Park, where he soon founded David Deal Play Day. He later served as the city’s parks superintendent. Known as “Mr. Recreation,” Carter earned national respect for his youth leadership programs and his commitment to the park system. Sunland Park was renamed in his honor in 1994.

Playday Teen Talent Showcase
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 3:30 to 6 p.m.

For ages 13-18 years old. Fort Lauderdale’s most talented teens will have the opportunity to showcase their on-stage swagger. Live entertainment from local hip-hop artists and a Battle of the DJ’s hosted by DJ Sheem.

Legacy Tribute at the Jazz Café
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 7 to 10 p.m.

Enjoy cool jazz and hot art as we pay tribute to the trailblazers who helped make Playday what it is today. Featuring the Larry Dogg Band, Akia Knowles, Musicians Enterprise, Daniella Davis and Vertical Praise. Honorees include Mary Barner, Vernon Dooling, Earnest Fuller, James “James T” Thomas and Carlton Tynes.

Boxing Under the Stars
Wednesday, August 10, 2011 – 7 to 10 p.m.

South Florida’s most talented boxers compete for their titles at the 2nd Annual Boxing Under the Stars event, presented in partnership with the Carter Park Contenders Boxing Club and the Florida Gold Coast Boxing Association.

Championship Swim Meet
Saturday, August 13, 2011 – 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, 501 Seabreeze Boulevard

Tri-county summer swim leagues are invited to compete in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and team relays.
