Applications for City of Fort Lauderdale’s Community Appearance Awards Now Available

Fort Lauderdale - Applications for the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 31st Annual Community Appearance Awards are now available on the City of Fort Lauderdale’s website at www.fortlauderdale.gov under the “What’s New” section on the home page or by calling 954-828-7600.  The deadline to submit applications is Friday, March 13, 2009 by 5 p.m.

Presented each year by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board, the awards recognize homeowners, homeowners associations, architects, developers and builders for projects that enhance the City's visual image and economic vitality.

Applications may be submitted for either construction or renovation projects in the following categories:

  • Commercial
    • Low-rise (1-4 stories)
    • High-rise (5 stories or more)
  • Institutional (e.g., hospitals, charitable projects, churches, schools, etc.)
  • Landscape/Garden (Commercial or Residential)
  • Multifamily Residence
    • Low-rise (1-4 stories)
    • Mid-rise (5-10 stories)  
    • High-rise (11 stories or more)
  • Municipal Facilities/Parks & Recreation
  • Single Family Residence
    • Up to 1,500 square feet
    • 1,501 to 3,000 square feet
    • More than 3,000 square feet
  • Retail (e.g., shops, malls, dealerships, etc.)
  • Special Projects (e.g., mixed use, affordable housing, other) 

Eligibility Requirements

In order for properties to be eligible for an award, the following requirements must be met:

  • Properties must be located within the City of Fort Lauderdale's corporate limits and be visible from a public thoroughfare.
  • The property owner must authorize the submission of a project and sign the application.
  • New construction projects must have a Certificate of Occupancy or a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy issued by the City's Planning and Zoning Department between April 2008 and March 2009.

The Community Appearance Board selects winning properties based on a site review of the project’s exterior, the structure and outdoor space, as well as how the project visually enhances the surrounding community.
