Northern Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Update
Currently, Greater Fort Lauderdale and Broward County are not within the projected impact area in official near-term forecast models and there is no oil in our area. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) models show the oil slick staying to the north, away from the Gulf's Loop Current and away from the Atlantic coast. Timing and the extent of impact, if any, is impossible to accurately project at this time and is dependent upon winds, tides and currents.
The Broward County Emergency Management team is closely monitoring developments of the northern Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Please note that there are no advisories recommending against travel to South Florida or any other precautions advising not to engage in fishing, diving or other water sports, as well as the consumption of seafood.
Greater Fort Lauderdale has 23 miles of Blue Wave Beaches, 33,000 accommodations, more than 4,000 restaurants and a wide range of attractions offering special deals for summer travel. For more information, visit:
