WOW Award Winner of the Month

March 2012

WOW WinnerDavid and Gedne Gosselin
District IV

The Gosselin’s moved from Denver to Fort Lauderdale because they loved the beach and the Miami Dolphins. They bought this Florida ranch style home in 2006 at the height of the real estate market knowing that they would be making a lot of changes to meet their needs and taste.

They started the renovation in the fall of 2006 and it took about one and half years to complete. The Gosselin’s did not live in the house while the renovations were underway because they had "gutted" all of the plumbing and electrical for the home. They both were glad they chose not to live in the home during the renovation because it was extremely stressful.

The Gosselin’s spent an incredible amount of time personally designing the exterior and interior of the home with a contemporary feel that is both functional and with a little bit of panache. The home has a stylish front door, updated exterior lighting fixture, and modern front windows to match the new contemporary look.

They continue to put in numerous hours every week towards the maintenance of the yard. This includes the landscaping of a beautiful areca palm island, two royal palms, and a variety of other colorful plants and shrubs. The Gosselin’s enjoy their home and making the neighborhood a nicer place as a whole.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Mr. and Mrs. Gosselin and thank them for enhancing their neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Mr. and Mrs. Gosselin with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition

February 2012

WOW WinnerNeal and Charles Nevlous
District III

This quaint house is located in the Lauderdale Manors Community. Neal and Charles Nevlous have lived in the home for 30 years. Neal works for the City of Fort Lauderdale as a Municipal Maintenance Worker III in the Environmental Services Division, he helped to coach the Lauderhill Lions Youth Football League to their 2011 undefeated season. Charles also works for the City as a Utility Service Worker in the Distribution and Collection Division. Their parents, Neal and Carolyn were active in the Lauderdale Manors Civic Association before they retired and moved away.

The house was built in the typical Florida ranch style of the 1950’s and maintained in beautiful condition. Two years ago they painted it a light buff color with mocha trim. The house forms a quiet background for the front garden with its shrubs and trees. Many years ago the senior Mr. Nevlous grafted the Staghorn Fern onto the Schefflera tree in the front yard that is today an impressive sight.

Topiary is the horticultural practice of training live perennial plants by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and sub-shrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes. In addition to the ornamentally shaped shrubs at the front entrance, the focal point of the yard is a perfectly circular tree with its interior branches removed forming a donut. The open interior lets sunlight shine on the colorful plants at the base of the tree that would otherwise be in shade. The bright green grass in the front yard is continued into the public swale, where a Tabablia tree and shrubs enhance the neighborhood.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Neal and Charles and thank them for enhancing their neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Neal and Charles with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift certificate and beautiful orchid from Home Depot from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

December 2011

WOW WinnerJoe and Laurie Toms
District I

Community Appearance Board members Barbara VanVoast and Christine Jones nominated Laurie and Joe Tom’s property for the WOW Award.

Laurie and Joe are long time South Florida residents and local business owners. They moved into their home two years ago because of the most unusual circumstance. Joe was in the neighborhood to do an estimate, an “open house” sign caught his attention, he decided to tour the house. He promptly called Laurie to tell her about this great find. She was playing golf and picked up his call from the 9th fairway that faced the back of the home. The house must have been calling out to them saying, "BUY ME." This most amazing coincidence resulted in a very happy purchase.

Some architectural features that enhance this home are pediments over the garage and front door, a privacy fence with iron details, and a beautiful fresh barrel tile roof. Laurie and Joe have painted and resurfaced the garage doors and done extensive landscaping with the help of a local landscaper. A huge vintage Royal Poinciana tree enhances the courtyard and unusual Japanese Blueberry trees grace the street side view. The home continues to be a work in progress and really adds to the beauty of their neighborhood.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Laurie and Joe and thank them for enhancing their neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Laurie and Joe with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift certificate and beautiful orchid from Home Depot from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

November 2011

WOW WinnerAdam Grant and Richard Sparkes
District IV

This historic home is nestled in the Riverside Park neighborhood and dates back to the early 1900's as a produce trading point on the New River. The area’s Swing Bridge currently undergoing renovation dates back to 1920's. During interior renovations they found newspapers from the 1929 Hurricane tucked away in the walls. Records show the gas lines were installed in around 1928. Since that was the oldest date originally found, a prior owner had the year “1928” mounted on the front of the house.

Adam and Richard have owned the home for approximately 10 years. The first year and a half the house was used as a rental property. For the last 8.5 years it has been a labor of love in restoring the home to the original 1920 West Indies influence.

The house was once surrounded by a chain link fence. The chain link is now gone and has been replaced with Florida natural species of flora and fauna. Copper rain gutters were used on the back of the home, the front is adorned with rain chains that catch rain water in ceramic pots at each corner of the home.

Traditional wooden Bahama shutters now hang where metal ones use to be. On a fall day you will find the shutters open creating a cross breeze to keep the sleeping patio cool and comfortable, much as they would have done in the 1920s.

The driveway has been replaced with Chicago bricks ranging from pink to golden brown tones which are typically used to restore homes and historical buildings. Old world Coquina shell tiles line the patio area surrounding the house. In the middle of the courtyard is fountain pond and sitting bench. In the winter months the fountain is literally surrounded by nearly a thousand amaryllis in bloom. In the spring the property is enhanced by a beautiful lavender canopy from the wisteria vines. Although there is still some work Adam and Rick would like to do, this home is truly worthy of a WOW award.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Adam and Richard and thank them for enhancing their neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Adam and Richard with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift certificate from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

She employs local landscapers to maintain the yard twice a month. There are beautifully trimmed hedges that hug the front and sides of the home. A classic Areca planter along with various other palm trees decorate the manicured lawn. Every December Frankie personally does a touch up to maintain and spruce up the house and keep it in tiptop shape.

Frankie’s home is an outstanding example of how a bright, fresh, and well-maintained home contributes to the overall appearance and value of a community.

September 2011

WOW WinnerJim and Cheryl White
District II

Community Appearance Board members Franci Bindler and Ry Nielsen nominated Jim and Cheryl White’s property for the September WOW Award. See the before photo or click the image on the right for an enlarged view.

Jim has owned the house for 27 years. He developed and designed all of the landscaping himself. The property was originally a bare lot and now features a lush, green lawn shaded by a variety of mature palms. This includes coconut palm trees that neatly line the swale.

As you approach the house, a cascade of vines frame the walkway on one side of the property. To the right, a cut coral wall and several sculptures enhance a sparkling pond. Even on a hot summer afternoon, the shady tropical oasis looks cool and inviting.

The driveway has marble pavers installed and there are attractive turquoise curtains hanging from the carport to conceal the framing and enhance the aesthetic value of the property.

Jim and Cheryl report that every week people stop by to compliment them on their tropical oasis.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jim and Cheryl and thank them for enhancing their neighborhood and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Jim and Cheryl with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

August 2011

WOW WinnerZen and Susan Mierzwa
District I

Community Appearance Board members Barbara VanVoast and Sheila Franklin nominated Zen and Susan Mierzwa’s property for the October, WOW Award. Click the image on the right for an enlarged view.

This new construction canal side residence is the essence of curb appeal, creativity, and craftsmanship. Contractor developer Zen Mierzwa, with 30 years of building experience, in a team effort with his wife, Susan, has built a unique 5 bedroom, 5 ½ bath home, with 3 attached air conditioned garages. Zen, influenced by his carpenter father’s meticulous craftsmanship, has created a truly unique home that integrates wood, stone, and metal, in a richly imaginative way. Environmental considerations were utilized, including French drain gutters for recycled rainwater. A metallic arched radius roof covers the mahogany front door. Low voltage lighting and self-watering planters were further initiatives to keep the project “green.”

Architect Akey created a modern blend of architectural designs, especially Prairie style pitches and overhangs, with a metal roof. Using “Silver Stone” mined in Texas and Brushed Coral Stone, combined with cypress and mahogany; the modern lines of the structure were softened and highlighted. Also unique was the creation of lighted glass garage doors. The entire façade of the home becomes a glowing nighttime jewel.

The front entry of the home is graced by 6 tall stone piers holding large planted urns, situated on the sides of a Indonesian slate path. The driveways use the same stone. The landscaping, perfectly integrated with the design of the home, uses environmentally friendly Empire Zoysia grass, with tall Palm and Cypress trees. This home is a WOW, without a doubt!

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Zen and Susan and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Zen and Susan with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition

July 2011

WOW WinnerBrett and Nadia Stefansson
District IV

Community Appearance Board members Ryan Paton and Greg Stuart nominated Brett and Nadia Stefansson’s property for the July WOW Award.

In 2007 Brett, Nadia and their son (Zachary), were on the hunt for a place to call home. They wanted a location providing them easy access to freeways, downtown, the beach, and a home in an older part of Ft Lauderdale. Brett and Nadia searched and searched and eventually stumbled on a neighborhood where they found streets lined with 100 year old oak trees, great neighbors, and situated in an up and coming area which had all the amenities they were looking for.

The house needed work but they always tell people they bought it just for the trees. They were fortunate enough to get a construction loan in 2007 and made plans to expand the house. The home, originally built in the 1950s, was small and lacked many of the modern amenities. Their family went through a lot of ups and downs as they were displaced during construction and often times were living out of boxes in a rental community. Construction ended late in 2008 after adding over 1,000 square feet and refurbishing the entire house (keeping of course the original hardwood floors!).

Brett and Nadia are very proud of their home, community, and being a part of the downtown Ft Lauderdale lifestyle. They look forward to the many years ahead as their family continues to grow.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Brett and Nadia and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Brett and Nadia with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

June 2011

WOW WinnerDelores McKinley
District III

Community Appearance Board members Ayisha Gordon and Paula Tighe nominated Delores McKinley’s property for the June WOW Award.

Delores McKinley has lived in this charming, pristine home in the Lake Aire Palm View community since the late 1960s. Her family has owned it since it was built in 1965. The family has continually updated the property, recently adding the accordion shutters and painted the home to its current appealing shade of green.

What you first notice when you see the home is the neat and manicured yard with not a blade of grass out of place. The home leaves no doubt that there is pride of ownership and many hours have been spent improving and maintaining its appearance. Tenant, Alan Johnson, started transforming the landscape earlier this year. With the assistance of Ms. McKinley, Mr. Johnson has added new trees, sod and spring time flowers. There are window boxes in the front adding color and character to the home. Mr. Johnson loves to landscape and he takes a great deal of pride in the many hours he dedicates to maintaining the property. The backyard has a mango and a Japanese plum tree and Mr. Johnson and Ms. McKinley enjoy an abundance of seasonal fruit they provide.

In just a few months Mr. Johnson has received many compliments and expressions of gratitude from the neighbors for enhancing the home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Ms. McKinley and thank her and Mr. Johnson for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Ms. McKinley with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

May 2011

WOW WinnerScott Hall and Randy Detrick
District II

Community Appearance Board members Karen Doyle and Larry Nielsen nominated Scott Hall and Randy Detrick, for the District II WOW Award. See the before photo or click the image on the right for an enlarged view.

Scott and Randy purchased this lovely Lake Ridge home in Fort Lauderdale in early 2000. This small neighborhood is located just north of Sunrise Boulevard across from Holiday Park. Scott and Randy work in Key West and spend their weekends at their Fort Lauderdale home with friends and family.

The small two-bedroom home is a typical 1950’s design situated on a large lot. The house desperately needed an outdoor facelift to improve its curb appeal. With the addition of impact windows, fresh paint, a cobblestone paver driveway, and new tropical landscape, the home is now an attractive contribution to Fort Lauderdale residences of Lake Ridge.

The original pink paint was blistered and peeling and required extensive hand stripping to restore the original stucco finish. It was repainted a warm and inviting caramel color. Even the roof color was changed from natural gray concrete tile to energy efficient bright white. The black asphalt circular driveway was badly cracked and the center island swale was paved. It was all removed and resurfaced with an attractive multi-colored cobblestone of gold and terracotta while leaving an environmentally friendly grass swale along the center island. The owners love the lush, tropical island landscape and therefore incorporated lots of palms and color into the new design. The result of all this considerable effort is a beautiful and well maintained home that they are proud to own and will enjoy year after year.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Scott and Randy and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Scott and Randy with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

April 2011

WOW WinnerJoyce and Vince Virga
District I

Driving by the Joyce and Vince’s home, one can’t help saying, “Wow, what a great house!” The sunny two-story home is reminiscent of British West Indies colonial and Florida Keys casual architecture. It is a winning combination! See the before photo or click the image on the right for an enlarged view.

The Lake Estates home, originally built in 1964, was purchased by Joyce and Vince in 2001. It was a conventional L-shaped ranch built on pilings. The home, located on a cul-de-sac and on a canal, is close to the beaches. These assets suited the needs and lifestyle of the Virgas and their two children, Alina and Vin. Joyce and Vince had experience in building a home prior to this purchase. It was with great enthusiasm they entered into remodeling this home in 2005. Vince’s grandparents had a home on Big Pine Key. He was inspired by the colorful old Florida Keys look and had a vision to embrace this for his family’s home.

Local architect, William Osbourn, brought the Joyce and Vince’s vision to reality. The 3,300 square foot stucco and HardiPlank home, with a galvanized metal roof, peaked areas and cupolas, has many interesting and creative details, including an inviting front porch. The canal side rear area has been remodeled to maximum use. There is a ten-foot deep dockage and several comfortable covered and open sitting areas to view the canal and relax and swim in their pool.

The native and low maintenance landscaping has been oriented towards Sea Grapes, Eureka palms, Ficus and flowering bushes. The Christmas and Queen Palms in the pool area were originally grown from seeds at Vince’s childhood home. Now transplanted, they are enjoyed by his family, providing a long and lasting tradition.

Not only has their home added much to their neighborhood, Joyce and Vince are actively involved and productive members in our community.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Joyce and Vince and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Joyce and Vince with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

March 2011

WOW WinnerNoi and Buddy Sherman
District IV

Community Appearance Board member Karen Doyle nominated Noi and Buddy Sherman’s property for the March WOW Award. See the before photo or click the image on the right for an enlarged view.

Buddy and Noi Sherman are long time residents of Fort Lauderdale's Croissant Park neighborhood and are very active in the community.

Noi and Buddy chose to settle in Croissant Park because they love their street and neighbors. So when space became an issue with the arrival of their baby girl Benjy, they decided to stay, re-model, and re-landscape. The result is a fantastic Asian/Thai influenced home with wonderful garden statues, furniture, and artwork acquired from their regular family trips to Thailand (Noi’s native country).

The house is painted an appealing and unique shade of bright green highlighted with gardens, walkways made of wood decking and stone and numerous water features including Thai ceramic rain barrels at the foot of all roof downspouts filled with gold fish and water lilies. Around every corner are special seating areas from which to enjoy the gardens. The effect is tranquil and lovely. Noi and Buddy recently hosted a 50th birthday celebration with hundreds of guests and there wasn’t a person attending who didn’t admire the beautiful and unique home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Noi and Buddy and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Noi and Buddy with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

February 2011

WOW WinnerMarvia Brown-Simmons and Harold Simmons
District III

Community Appearance Board members Cara Pavalock and Ry Nielsen nominated Marvia and Harold Simmons’s property for the February WOW Award.

Marvia and Harold have lived in the home since they built it in 1967. After raising their family, they updated the home by installing an attractive barrel tile roof, replacing the front door, and later hurricane proofing the windows with accordion shutters. The major renovations which included an addition were done around 2005. The addition was added to accommodate their daughter who in college became wheelchair bound as the result of an accident. Marvia and Harold hired an architect to complete the suite which consists of a bedroom, bathroom, and sitting room, all with air conditioning separate from the rest of the home.

Now retired, the former Broward County School Board employees have maintained the beauty of the home with a modern stone driveway and path leading to the front door and various exotic palms native to Florida. The backyard is also beautifully manicured and includes a quaint garden with collard greens and tomatoes. Marvia loves updating and changing the design of the landscaping and states she never realized she had a green thumb until she retired.

In addition, they added a privacy fence, though for years, their backyard consisted of only fields and wildlife. They have seen their neighborhood grow and develop over the past 42 years and are thankful for their neighbors and their community.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Marvia and Harold and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Marvia and Harold with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

January 2011

WOW WinnerDavid Griffith
District II

Community Appearance Board members Barbra Stern and Patrick Maloy nominated David’s property for the January WOW Award.

David purchased this home in the heart of Middle River Terrace in June, 2010. It was built in 1953 and was your typical South Florida home complete with a carport.

While the prior owners had updated the interior of the home, the exterior needed a little tender loving care. David changed the exterior paint from a pale green to a more modern charcoal gray with fresh white trim. Plantation shutters adorn the windows and front door, brightening up the exterior and opening up the home. All of the beams in the carport were replaced and updated. Beautiful outdoor drapes (drawn open), tall planters, and a lovely handmade light fixture were added to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the carport. From the street, the carport actually looks like it could be used as a cozy outdoor sitting room.

David has replaced the fencing around the property, and with the help of a local landscaper, has transformed the dried out lawn into a lovely garden. The driveway was redone with pavers and a courtyard was created with Florida palms. The new landscaping includes tropical planters with Florida native/drought-friendly species. David also landscaped the backyard and plans additional improvements to the back of the home where he has a unique wall-mounted English fountain.

In the few short months that David has lived in Middle River Terrace, he has received many compliments and expressions of gratitude from his neighbors for enhancing his home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to David and thank him for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting David with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck’s Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

December 2010

WOW WinnerMichele & Ben Benavente
District I

Community Appearance Board members Greg Stuart, Franci Bindler, and John Holmes nominated Michele and Ben’s property for the December WOW Award.

In March 2009, Ben and Michele, along with a Boxer, Great Dane, and a baby on the way (Emma), decided it was time to trade their charming yet less than spacious two-bedroom Rio Vista home for something with a little more room to grow. Born and raised Fort Lauderdale residents, they knew they didn’t want to stray far, so they looked to the Coral Ridge neighborhood where they both grew up. Ironically, the house they ended up falling in love with, turned out to be nestled along Bayview Drive, directly between the two homes they each grew up in.

Michele and Ben’s vision throughout the renovation process was to retain the home’s quiet, solid sense of dignity and poise, while adding their own individual flair.

The first step was repainting the house to a warm shade of green and changing the front door and garage to a natural mahogany stain. Then, they traded the old windows in for more energy efficient and hurricane season friendly impact windows. Next, they redesigned the original circular driveway and island into two separate straight driveways and a courtyard, which allowed for a clean-cut look and provided more useable open green space. They used tumbled marble pavers to create eight large quadrants divided by grass borders on each driveway.

Next, four columns were installed to flank the sides of each driveway that were joined in the middle by a low-lying wall. They topped each of the four columns with authentic, New-Orleans-style gas lamps that cast a secluded and private estate feel at night.

Rather than tear out and replace the already existing mature plants and trees, they decided to relocate and reuse them in a way that would be better suited to the property. They now have a vast array of palms that include several Sago, Florida Royal, and Foxtail palms. They also added white crepe jasmine vines to flank the garage door and wind their way among the iron gates.

Almost two years later, Michele and Ben finally get to enjoy all the hard work they put in. They come home to their dream house every day and are so very proud and flattered whenever neighbors stop by to admire their home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Michele and Ben and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Michele and Ben with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chucks Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

November 2010

WOW WinnerJonna & Brett Circe
District IV

Community Appearance Board member Ryan Paton, nominated Jonna and Brett Circe’s property for the November WOW Award.

Jonna and Brett shopped for a home in many Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods. In 2000 when their first child was born, this house in “The Grove” caught their eye, and they put in an offer.

The house was a 1950's home, typical of the time period, solidly built with a good layout and plenty of room for a small family. The location is what brought them to this area. They are close to work, excellent schools, downtown, the beach, and all major highways, yet it is a quiet neighborhood with a mature canopy and little through traffic. They soon after started to meet the neighbors which made the house even more desirable.

After living in the house for a year, they started to develop plans for the future. If they were going to stay, it was going to need some work. Small closets and no garage were their first tasks. Jonna and Brett developed a plan in several phases so they would always be able to stay in the home during the renovations. Throughout all the phases they hoped to maintain an outward appearance that would complement the style of houses on the street and be true to the old Florida style. The final addition was a new kitchen, office, (Mediterranean) paver driveway, and an upstairs master suite with patios. The inside was modernized with everything they would need to stay in the house long term.

2010 is the Circe’s 10th Anniversary in their home and they are extremely happy to be a part of such a wonderful neighborhood. The transformation they made has truly enhanced the neighborhood, and stands as an example for others to follow in their footsteps.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jonna & Brett and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Jonna and Brett with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Chuck's Steakhouse gift card from the Community Appearance Board to celebrate this recognition.

October 2010

WOW WinnerJames Farrick
District II

James has lived in this mid-century modern home in Victoria Park, since 2002. He feels very fortunate to have been the first person to see the house when it was put up for sale. This cozy two-bedroom one-bath home, built in 1952, was perfect for him. It had all the bare “bones” he needed to make this (then) fifty-year-old home his own.

The house, originally painted yellow, is now a soft, cool green with black shutters, white front and garage doors. It was important to James to keep the integrity of the home, and retain the charming character of Victoria Park. The lawn and front garden are encompassed by a picturesque white picket fence. Since moving in, James replaced 90% of the plantings, including the Bermuda grass. Every attempt was made to make the garden low maintenance, with water conservation and the needs of the environment taking precedence. Plants were strategically placed for optimum growth with minimal maintenance. An attractive architectural detail is found on the side of the garage, where an open, flowing white sculptural pattern allows for air flow into the garage.

James has created a very appealing, attractive home that fits comfortably in this Victoria Park neighborhood. His efforts merit the WOW Award of the month.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to James and thank him for enhancing his community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting James with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift card from the Community Appearance Board

September 2010

WOW WinnerAltamese and Lonnie Lundy
District III

The Community Appearance Board would like to thank Ms. Juanita Gray, District III Representative to the Council of the Fort Lauderdale Civic Associations for providing a list of potential nominees for the September WOW.

Community Appearance Board members Marilyn Mammano and Jimmy Witherspoon, nominated Altamese and Lonnie Lundy’s property for the September WOW Award.

Altamese and Lonnie have lived in their house in the Rock Island neighborhood for over 40 years. When they built their home in 1968, it was a one-story ranch style house with a screened Florida room. In 1998, a hurricane blew the screened room away. When rebuilding, they enclosed the Florida room and added a second story to accommodate their family, including their two daughters Samala and Cynthia. In addition, Lonnie built a multi-arched loggia breezeway at the rear of the house that is both decorative and functional. Altamese and Lonnie now enjoy sitting in their breezeway to read and watch the neighborhood activity.

Their meticulously maintained home and landscaping is a credit to their neighborhood. The house was recently painted to Altamese and Lonnie’s favorite color, a light terracotta with cream accents. The yard is tastefully landscaped with a green lawn worthy of a golf course, newly planted palm trees, bushes, and carefully maintained shade trees.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Altamese and Lonnie and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Altamese and Lonnie with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift card from the Community Appearance Board.

August 2010

WOW WinnerKathy and Andy Guerke
District I

Community Appearance Board members Barbra Stern and Victor Yue, nominated Kathy and Andy Guerke’s property for the August WOW Award.

Andy and Kathy first lived in the house directly across the street from this property in 1997 and later moved away. Having had experience in renovating properties for resale, they saw a great opportunity with this house. For years they watched this property and waited for a chance to buy it. Finally, in July 2009, they purchased this single family home and moved back into the neighborhood. The original 1,100 square feet cottage style home with a low-pitched roof was built in 1953. It had two bedrooms, two baths, and a carport with unsightly window mounted air-conditioning units. The house was an eye sore in the neighborhood and was in desperate need of repair.

After they purchased the home, Kathy and Andy started the renovation project which included an addition of a master suite and a den and converted the carport into an enclosed two-car garage. They removed the low-pitched roof and transformed its architecture into a simple and contemporary expression of pure building geometric forms based on the function of the interiors. A timeless white paint is used on the exterior accented by a flag stone base and front entrance. The landscape treatment with bamboos and grey river stones in the front yard add to the serenity of a setting of simplicity and understated elegance.

Sustainable design strategies employed include the installation of two new air-conditioning units (allowing efficient use of energy based on occupancy), new insulation, new appliances with Energy Star ratings, and dual flush toilet fixtures.

The project does not only have an immediate visual impact for its neighbors, but also enhances the appearance of the neighborhood at large. The Guerkes received flowers from their neighbors welcoming them back and thanking them for transforming the old property into a beautiful home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Kathy and Andy and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Kathy and Andy with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift card from the Community Appearance Board.

July 2010

WOW WinnerJackie Higgins
District IV

Community Appearance Board members Valerie J. Amor and Barbara Van Voast, nominated Jackie Higgins’ property for the July WOW Award.

Jackie is a master gardener and a member of the Rare Fruit Council, which is evident to those passing by her home as they will quickly notice the captivating, enticing, and beautiful garden surrounding it. More importantly, Jackie’s garden was recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, which is a prestigious designation that recognizes those that create healthy and sustainable habitats that offer food and safe harbor for wildlife and insects.

Jackie dreamed of having a garden as a child, and after spending 17 years living in a condominium that denied plants, animals, and birds, her dream became a reality. She happily refers to her “garden of eaten” as a wonderful mix of ornamental and edible landscaping, and a place where all are welcome.

Over the past 15 years Jackie’s garden has evolved to include plantings such as Butterfly Bushes nestled amongst peach laden trees and broccoli, which turtles happily nibble on.

Jackie enthusiastically shares her garden with neighbors, strangers, foxes, birds, butterflies, turtles, and more. She hopes it brings joy to all those lucky enough to see it while traveling on Riverland Road.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly presented the July WOW Award to Jackie and thanked her for enhancing her community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

WOW WinnerTeresa and Calvin Brown
Dorsey-Riverbend - District III

Community Appearance Board members Ayisha Gordon and Ken Green, nominated Teresa and Calvin Brown’s property for the June WOW Award.

Teresa and Calvin have lived in Florida since 1968. They purchased their home in the Dorsey-Riverbend neighborhood in 1992, and since moving in, they have made numerous upgrades to it. Teresa and Calvin added a patio area where they enjoy sitting on their canopy-covered swing or relaxing while listening to the water falling from the three-tier water fountain with family and friends.

In addition, they added a barrel tile roof and installed a circular driveway with decorative pavers in the front and on the side of the house, achieving a classic look, while providing convenience and ease of access.

Calvin, who owns his own contracting business, applied the eye-catching stucco siding to the exterior walls, and the use of earthy colors and window accents transformed this traditional house into a beautiful contemporary style home.

The landscaping was re-done to include Hawaiian and Triple Palms, Hibiscus and other native plants, and a variegated hedge surrounding the front enhances the landscape and the character of their residence.

Teresa and Calvin’s home sits on a corner lot, which provides neighbors and visitors multiple views of the extensive efforts they have put into the upgrade, renovation, and landscape design of their home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly presented the June WOW Award to Teresa and Calvin and thanked them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

May 2010

WOW WinnerMay and Kevin Muench
Las Olas Isles – District II

Community Appearance Board member Shelley Walker nominated May and Kevin Muench’s property for the May WOW Award.

May and Kevin’s two-story, Key West style home sits atop 150 feet of deep water lagoons that offer expansive waterway views. Their home is canopied by lush tropical landscape and is designed to create a simple elegance and ease of living inside and out.

The home, which was constructed to withstand up to 250 mile per hour winds, has spacious southern verandas, large upper and lower porches, an outside kitchen, and vast open interior space, all designed to enjoy South Florida’s balmy weather.

The exterior of the home features a three-car carport with decorative dormers that lead to two multi-car garages. All exterior areas, from the gates to the top porches, are marble with stairs, and ramps were installed to provide ADA accessibility to welcome any guest. Completing the exterior design is a beautiful landscape that boasts a colorful array of plants and varying species of palms that grace the property.

May and Kevin also took special care to weave the overall look and feel of their home together with the name of the street they live on, Isle of Palms Drive. From the Palm trees engraved into the home’s shutters to the ones incorporated into the custom metal railings, the upper front balcony, and the entryway gate, the Isle of Palms theme was tastefully carried throughout the design.

May and Kevin’s hearts are truly reflected in the themes and design of this magnificent property that blends into a seemingly simple, yet refined harmony without being ostentatious.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to May and Kevin and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting May and Kevin with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift card from the Community Appearance Board.

April 2010

WOW WinnerCarol Cappadona
Bermuda Riviera Association – District I

Community Appearance Board members Marilyn Mammano and Franci Bindler nominated Carol Cappadona’s property for the April WOW Award.

This fabulous house in the Bermuda Riviera section of Fort Lauderdale is owned by Carol, an interior designer, who says this is her "final house.” When she purchased the property it contained a typical South Florida house. When planning to renovate the inside and outside of the house, Carol wanted to keep the single story, ranch style footprint of the original house and incorporate influences from her international travels into redesigning it.

One of the most prominent features of Carol’s eclectic home is the pergola on top of the house, which is only accessible via an exterior winding staircase.

The exterior of Carol’s house also features a mix of privacy hedges, masonry walls, wrought iron gates, and an additional driveway. There are also 36 outside lanterns installed on the property, and all of the iron grill work on the second floor is patterned after 18th century France.

A unique feature of the landscape is the “Porthole” cut into the Ficus hedge located at the corner of the property. The porthole invites passersby to look through it and take in the landscaped fore court with its beautiful paving, Bougainvillea and Cypress trees.

Carol’s use of color, texture, landscaping and architectural details when redesigning her house offers a pedestrian-friendly experience and enhances the Bermuda Riviera neighborhood.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Carol and thank her for enhancing her community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Carol with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift certificate from the Community Appearance Board.

March 2010

WOW WinnerMonica and Steve Andrews
River Oaks Civic Association – District IV

Community Appearance Board members Sheila Franklin, Patrick Maloy and Ryan Paton nominated Steve and Monica Smith’s property for the March WOW Award.

Monica and Steve purchased their two-bedroom, two-bath home in 1991 during a time when most of west Broward was just being developed. Over the years they took on weekend projects to renovate the home and make it their own.

When they had their second son, Monica and Steve realized their home was not large enough for a family of four. They considered moving, but liked the neighborhood and did not want to leave all of their friends. Rather than move from an area they loved, Monica and Steve decided to remodel their home

To make their home roomier for their expanded family, Monica and Steve added a second story, which allowed for two additional bedrooms, a master bathroom and wraparound balcony. They also enclosed the carport and converted it to a dining room and remodeled the kitchen and laundry room.

The exterior of their home was updated and electric, plumbing and other improvements were made to make the home compliant with current building codes. To hurricane-proof their home, Monica and Steve added impact windows.

Monica and Steve’s remodeling project was quite challenging with a two-year old and newborn living through the construction. Their two boys thought one of the builders was the children’s television character, Bob the Builder, and loved every minute of it. However, Steve and Monica were a bit more stressed!

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Monica and Steve and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.
We have the pleasure of presenting them with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a Home Depot gift card from the Community Appearance Board.

January 2010

WOW WinnerJan Faust
Victoria Park Civic Association – District II

Community Appearance Board members Shelly Walker and Ryan Paton nominated Jan Faust’s property for the January WOW Award.

Jan’s home is situated on a lovely winding street canopied by large old oak trees unique to Victoria Park. It was originally built in the 1940s as a basic 2-bedroom, 2-bath CBS structure. In the early 1970’s, a Florida room, master bedroom suite, and swimming pool were added.

After purchasing the home in November 2007, Jan completely gutted the home and expanded it to make it her own 3-bedroom, 2½-bath tropical paradise.

The exterior of the home now features a courtyard front entrance with a curved wall and privacy gate. The old windows and doors have been replaced with white custom impact windows and French doors, and the tired roof is now a beaming grey metal roof, which enhances the home’s Key West image.

The swimming pool was redesigned to create a beach-like setting with a shallow walk-in design. The pool features a waterfall, a connecting hot tub and is filled with salt water versus chlorine water. The pool is also surrounded by an expansive coral rock patio and tropical landscape native to Florida.

This authentic old Florida home has also been upgraded with greener equipment and materials, including low-flow toilets, a tankless water supply, energy efficient appliances and lighting.

During the renovation, Jan made many interesting discoveries. She found Dade County Pine wood beneath sheet rock that covered the high beam ceilings in the living room. The sheet rock was removed to expose the beautiful wood beams that are now painted white. An old industrial attic fan was discovered in tact, and beer cans from the 1940s were found tucked into the rafters.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jan and thank her for enhancing her community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

We have the pleasure of presenting Jan with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift certificate from the Community Appearance Board.

November 2009

WOW WinnerDr. Ivan and Kristi Puente
Coral Ridge Association, Inc. – District I

Community Appearance Board members Franci Bindler and Barbara Van Voast nominated Dr. Ivan and Kristi Puente’s property for the November WOW Award.

Ivan and Kristi’s house has undergone many transformations since it was originally built in their Coral Ridge neighborhood in 1989. Their home was renovated in 1997 by the previous owner, and in 2005 Hurricane Wilma entered through the windows of two balconies, imploded the home and took the roof with her. As a result, everything from the electricity to the drywall had to be rebuilt inside the home, and all of the landscaping had to be replaced outside the home.

Kristi and Ivan have since rebuilt their home, which features a unique combination of stainless steel and glass. The eye-catching stainless steel front doors are surrounded by a glass entryway and finished with a new stainless steel overhang.

Kristi and Ivan had the two bedroom balconies removed from the back of the home and closed in the large windows with solid walls, which expanded one of the bedrooms. A second floor bedroom above the garage was also expanded and made flush with the front of the home. An office loft was constructed at the opposite end of the second floor. These improvements resulted in an additional 450 square feet of living space for the Puente’s.
In addition, seventy percent of the home’s windows have been replaced with hurricane-resistant impact glass windows, and the entire property was re-landscaped. The highlight of Kristi and Ivan’s landscaping is their collection of Palm trees, most of which are native to Florida.

Although there was significant damage to their home, Kristi and Ivan took advantage of the opportunity to make several structural improvements to safeguard it for the future. Not only have they made their home safer, they made it more enjoyable for their family.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Kristi and Ivan, and thank them for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.
We have the pleasure of presenting Kristi and Ivan with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift certificate from the Community Appearance Board.

WOW WinnerAnn Stanfa
Victoria Park Civic Association – District II

Community Appearance Board members Shelley Walker and Rick Murphy nominated Ann Stanfa’s property for the September WOW Award.

This charming home built in 1941 had suffered from aging and neglect prior to being purchased by Ann.

Ann has carefully restored the exterior of her home to its original “Victoria Park” charm and completely re-landscaped the property, which includes utilizing Florida-friendly plants and trees. In addition, the brick walkway and driveway she had installed greatly enhance the property.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Ann and thank her for enhancing their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

WOW WinnerKathy LaSalle
Imperial Point Association – District I

Community Appearance Board member Franci Bindler nominated Kathy LaSalle’s property for the August WOW Award.

Kathy LaSalle purchased her home in the Imperial Point neighborhood in 1983. Feeling as if her house was the “ugliest on the block,” Ms. LaSalle undertook an extensive renovation, starting with its exterior.

The jalousie windows and doors were replaced with impact glass. Decorative lighting was added to the paver walkways that meander through the property. The outside of the property was completely re-landscaped and includes an abundance of native and low water eco-friendly plantings. In addition, a new irrigation system was also installed.

Kathy knew she wanted to have a home that was unique and special, so she worked closely with her contractor to design and build her own Shangri-La. Kathy’s home has truly wowed the community.

WOW WinnerAndrea and Scott Woodburn
Victoria Park Civic Association – District II

Community Appearance Board members Greg Stuart and Randall Vitale nominated Andrea and Scott Woodburn’s property for the May WOW Award.

Andrea and Scott’s home was built in 1939 and throughout their renovations, they took great care to keep the design features of this 71-year-old cottage home alive.

Upon purchasing the home, Andrea and Scott wanted to make several renovations to utilize the space more efficiently. They added a master bedroom and converted the previous bedroom into a closet. They also enclosed the carport and converted it to a garage, which created additional space to bring their washer and dryer indoors. Andrea and Scott had all of the windows and doors replaced, had a new roof installed, and the entire house has been re-stuccoed.

Andrea and Scott also brought some cohesiveness to the outdoor areas by installing pavers with embedded shells to match the driveway. They also re-sodded the entire yard and landscaped using native, drought-friendly plants and trees.

Andrea and Scott’s efforts enhance the Victoria Park neighborhood and have refreshed this Old Florida cottage home so it will last another 70 years.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Andrea and Scott, and thank them for enhancing their community.

We have the pleasure of presenting them with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a gift certificate from the WOW Award Sponsor, Home Depot.

WOW WinnerJenneita Higgins and Marion Mead
Melrose Park Civic Association – District III

Community Appearance Board members Pearl Maloney, Ayisha Gordon, and Ryan Paton nominated Jennetia Higgins and Marion Mead’s property for the June WOW Award.

In 1989, Marion took a weekend trip to Fort Lauderdale to visit a friend and get away from the cold New York weather. She immediately fell in love with Fort Lauderdale’s tropical climate. Approximately three months after her visit, Marion’s friend informed her that he was selling his house and was giving her the first opportunity to purchase it. Although she was not planning to purchase a home, Marion and her mother, Jenneita, thought this would be a great summer home for the family.

Marion and Jennetia put countless hours into making the needed repairs to this 2,100 square foot home in the Melrose Park neighborhood. The home’s prominent features include the Terracotta circular driveway and the beautiful landscape, which includes various palm trees that outline the property.

What Marion and Jenneita enjoy most about their home is the rich soil that enables them to cultivate numerous types of fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh herbs such as basil, parsley, tea mint, and oregano. They feel that it is best to eat natural, homegrown produce because it is healthier, and they feel it is even more rewarding to grow it themselves.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jenneita and Marion, and thank them for enhancing their community.

WOW WinnerVicki Eckels
Harbordale Civic Association – District IV

Community Appearance Board members Marilyn Mammano and Pieter Coetzee nominated Vicki Eckels’ property for the March WOW Award.

Vicki Eckels purchased her home, located at 917 S.E. 14th Street, in January of 2003. When it was built in the mid 1950s, it was a modest two-bedroom home with a carport and a detached storage building. Over time, the carport was enclosed and the house was converted into a duplex.

Vicki's initial plan was to perform a simple renovation to return the property to a single-family home. However, as walls were torn down, problems and opportunities resulted in a complete gutting and makeover of the home.

One of Vicki’s main goals was to implement “green” design and building features aimed at reducing her carbon footprint. The insulation in her home is made from recycled blue jeans. The home is also powered by a 5,000 watt solar power system, which contains a data module that monitors daily solar power production. Since Vicki began monitoring the system last August, it has provided as much as 58 percent of her electric usage.

Vicki also installed new ENERGY STAR® appliances, a high efficiency central air conditioner, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs and tinted windows.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Vicki Eckels, and thank her for enhancing her community and investing in the future of the planet.

We have the pleasure of presenting Vicki with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission and a $50 gift certificate from the WOW Award Sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.

Mary and Amos Benefield are the proud owners of this lovely home, which was built in 1962 as a one-story, three-bedroom, one-bath home. However, Mary and Amos soon had to enlarge their home to make room for their growing family.

Although Amos worked full time, he performed all of the construction for the additions himself, which resulted in a two story luxurious six-bedroom, four-bath home. Amos also constructed a large patio for entertaining family and friends, and his son-in-law installed the barrel tile roof.

Mary and Amos raised their four children in this beautiful home. Their children often return to their childhood home to participate in many of the family gatherings held throughout the year.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Mary and Amos and thank them for enhancing their community.

These native Floridians are committed to keeping their Fort Lauderdale community aesthetically beautiful, and their goal is to influence others to also take pride in their homes and neighborhood. The board members nominating this home noticed that among all of the neighboring homes, Tonie and Charles’ house shines the brightest of all.

Charles spends numerous hours maintaining the property and on any given day you can see him outside grooming the landscape or doing some form of maintenance. In fact, when the board members approached Charles to nominate his home for the WOW award, the sun was setting and he was still busy working outside. Charles shows great pride in his home and his motto is, “a green thumb during the spring, summer, winter, and fall, means you can pass by anytime and see the grass is greenest of all.”

When their neighbors noticed board members taking pictures of Tonie and Charles’ home, they rushed over to find out if the house was being put up for sale. WOW WinnerKrista & Edward Deeb
Coral Ridge Country Club Estates – District I

Krista and Edward Deeb purchased their home, located at 4310 NW 28th Avenue, approximately three years ago. The couple fell in love with the Coral Ridge Country Club Estates neighborhood prior to the birth of their son. Krista said, “with a beautiful City park right around the corner, and the relaxed Fort Lauderdale lifestyle, who wouldn’t love living here.” That wonderful outlook was their inspiration for remodeling their classic 1960s home.

With nothing but a crisp lawn, asphalt driveway, gray/blue paint, original windows, and wooden double doors, Krista and Edward’s new home was like many others; it was beginning to show its age. With a lot of hard work and determination, they were able to transform their 1960s home into a charming modern family home. After installing a new roof, windows, doors, brick pavers, and exceptional landscaping, Krista and Edward have left their neighbors and friends saying WOW! Jean and Paul Hartmann purchased their home in the Croissant Park neighborhood in 2004. After Hurricane Wilma was found guilty of a “hit and run” that left their home without a roof in 2005, Jean and Paul embarked on constructing their dream home. Over a two-year period, they put extensive work into both the structural renovation and landscaping of their home, which elevated it to one of the most notable homes in their neighborhood.

Jean and Paul’s home sits on a corner lot, providing multiple views, which are enhanced by its unique blend of traditional and modern features. The extensive landscaping features a well manicured lawn with mosaic planters, lilies, Bottle Palms, as well as Buddha Belly Bamboo and Royal Poinciana that line each side of a rustic iron gate that leads to a brick paver path inviting guests in.

Every aspect of this home reflects the extensive labor, creativity, attention to detail, dedication, and the heart and soul Jean and Paul put into rebuilding what Hurricane Wilma left behind.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jean and Paul and thank them for turning an unfortunate situation into one that results in a beautiful home that adds charm to the Croissant Park neighborhood and provides inspiration to passers-by and surrounding homeowners seeking to improve their own properties.

October 2008

WOW WinnerMr. Darrin Brown
Lauderdale Manors HOA – District III

Darrin passed by the lot at 1940 N.W. 14th Avenue numerous times throughout his daily travels. It was abandoned; often a target for illegal dumping, and it was an eyesore in the neighborhood. Darrin was able to look beyond the lot’s unsightly appearance and envision what his dream home would look like in the empty space.

Determined to transform this property, Darrin worked closely with a local architect who translated his vision into reality. He custom built a 2,200 square foot home that was proportionate with the lot. The prominent features of Darrin’s home are the natural stone arched entryway and arch-framed windows, which serve as a focal point that invites passersby to take a second look at his property. The Chicago brick paver driveway and foyer, and the professionally maintained landscape add the finishing touches to Darrin’s stunning home.

Darrin’s imagination and perseverance resulted in a magnificent property that enhances his neighborhood. His efforts are proof that others can turn their dreams into reality to better their community and the City of Fort Lauderdale. Darrin took a chance on a neglected property and his efforts represent everything the WOW award stands for, which is celebrating properties that promote aesthetic value to the community.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Darrin and thank him for enhancing the community. We have the pleasure of presenting him with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $50 gift certificate from the WOW Award Sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.

August 2008

WOW WinnerMr. & Mrs. David and Deanna Abram
Imperial Point Association – District I

Community Appearance Board member Ryan Paton nominated David and Deanna Abram’s property for the August WOW Award.

Deanna and David looked all over Broward County to find their “dream” home, but something kept drawing them back to Fort Lauderdale. That something was the 1987 movie, “Revenge of the Nerds,” which was (of course) filmed in “legendary” Fort Lauderdale. The way it portrayed our City as “paradise” has always stayed with Dave and Deanna, and they always dreamed of living here.

Their dream of living in Fort Lauderdale became a reality when they purchased their home in Imperial Point in May of 2004. Although the home did not have all of the features they wanted, they set goals to renovate and expand it to fit their needs and wants.

After several years of working three jobs and raising a son, Deanna and David began remodeling their home. They added 500 square feet to their home, replaced the roof, added a pool, installed pavers in the front, side and back of the house, re-landscaped the property, installed a pool, and enclosed the car port to make a garage.

Deanna and David exemplify what can be accomplished when you set goals and work hard to accomplish them. They represent everything that the WOW award stands for. They sacrificed and worked hard to build their dream home and with that hard work, made their goals a reality. The renovation speaks for itself and their efforts truly enhance their neighborhood.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Deanna and David and thank them for enhancing the community. We have the pleasure of presenting them with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $75 gift certificate from the WOW Award sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.

July 2008

WOW WinnerMr. & Mrs. Glen Tupler
River Oaks Civic Association, District 4

Cynthia and Glen nominated their property for the July WOW Award through the Community Appearance Board’s new self-nomination program.

Cynthia and Glen redesigned their home for outdoor entertaining with family, friends and neighbors. Much of their inspiration results from their journeys to the Abacos and Exumas islands.

One of the most stunning features of their home is the renovation of the outdoor porch, which maximizes a glorious view of Fort Lauderdale's New River and intrigues hundreds of boaters that pass by it each day. The design of the porch gives the home the illusion of being two-stories, yet it remains a one-story home.

The porch is surrounded with lush native landscaping and is streamlined with a modern splash. Design features include a bubbling water fountain, fire pit, spiral staircase, abalone seashell terrazzo floors, a Mexican beach pebble garden, and an underground rainwater run-off system. A unique feature of the porch is the sky blue second floor canopy, which is an old Caribbean design feature aimed to distract nesting birds.

The Tupler’s new porch is innovative, yet informal, and undeniably majestic.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Cynthia and Glen and thank them for enhancing the community. We have the pleasure of presenting them with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $75 gift certificate from the WOW Award sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.

WOW WinnerLynda & Tim Davey
Victoria Park Civic Association, District 2

Community Appearance Board member Chip Burpee nominated Lynda & Tim Davey’s property for the May 2008 WOW Award.

Lynda and Tim’s home was built in 1936. Initially, it was perfect for the two of them and their cat and dog. However, when they expanded their family with two children, the original 1,200 square foot home became too small. They needed more room, but did not want to move out of their beautiful Victoria Park Neighborhood.

Lynda and Tim decided to renovate and enlarge their existing home but were determined to keep the original structure intact and avoid creating a McMansion that would look out of place.

Lynda and Tim more than doubled the size of the original structure by adding 1,700 square feet to their home. In doing so, they were able to accomplish their goal of creating a distinct, charming, fully functional home for their family that truly blends the character of their neighborhood with the beauty of a great new design.

April 2008

WOW WinnerDana and Pat McDonald
Imperial Point Homeowner's Association, District 1

Community Appearance Board members Marilyn Mammano and Ron Fairchild nominated Dana and Pat McDonald’s property for the April WOW Award.

In 1962, a row of model homes was constructed along N.E. 2nd Way near the main entrance to the Imperial Point neighborhood. Forty-two years later, Dana and Pat McDonald purchased one of these original model homes. They found the Imperial Point neighborhood charming, but their new home was in need of updating.

Dana and Pat made several significant changes to their home. They had a Chicago Brick driveway installed that offers an 'old world' feel. The driveway starts at the road and runs up to the new front patio and entry to their home. The front patio is framed by four stone capped piers and wrought iron decorative fencing, which is completed by an ornamental gate.

The new color of the home is a perfect contrast to the roof tiles, and decorative window and door surrounds accentuate the home’s exterior. A barrel tile roof with variegated colors and fascia painted in a complimentary brown is the perfect crown for this home. Ornamental lights and beautiful landscaping, complete with Tuscan style topiaries, complete this home’s transformation.

After spending four years renovating the home and a lot of hard work, the McDonald’s home is a charming addition to the surrounding neighborhood.

March 2008

WOW WinnerJack Zellar
Sunset Civic Association, District 3

Community Appearance Board member Patrick McTigue, Community Appearance Board Chair, nominated Jack Zellar’s property for the March WOW Award.

Jack is a Fort Lauderdale native who grew up just a few blocks away from his present home, which is located in the Sunset neighborhood at 3608 SW 21st Street. He purchased his home in 1998, and after two years of renovating the property, he completed this true gem.

Jack is a local landscaper and utilized his experience and expertise when re-landscaping his home. Jack strategically designed the landscape to flow around his home and used a variety of flowers, native plants, and trees to accent the property. When driving by the home, you immediately say “WOW”, as it draws you into a tropical paradise.

The light yellow exterior color with the white trim highlights the meticulous landscaping, which is truly the focal point of this beautiful home.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Jack Zellar and thanks him for enhancing the community.

We have the pleasure of presenting Jack with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $75 gift certificate from the WOW Award sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.

February 2008

WOW WinnerPatricia and Brad Mattair
Rock Island Neighborhood Association, District 3

Community Appearance Board members Ayisha Gordon, Bess Gathers and Cathy Curry nominated Patricia and Brad Mattair’s property for the February WOW Award.

Patricia and Brad purchased their lovely Florida Style home at 3010 N.W. 23 Street in 1973 and are the original owners. Initially, the house was much smaller, but over the years new additions were constructed.

Patricia designed and built ponds on the east and west side of the home. She is the proud caretaker of the landscaping, which is meticulously decorated with many tropical, native plants and trees, such as the Ginger and Eugenia plants, and Bismarck, Royal, Foxtails, Alexander and Christmas palms. This well-chosen landscape design offers serenity, warmth and an inviting theme to Patricia and Brad’s home.

While looking out their window during hurricane Wilma, Patricia and Brad cheered to see the Eugenia plants still standing strong. However, before they could get another cheer in, a second strong wind came and uprooted the plants and everything disappeared into the storm. Since then, they have spent numerous, painstaking hours rebuilding the landscape, and are proud of the results.

Patricia and Brad take great pride in their property and will continue to maintain and enhance their property in hopes that others in their community will follow their lead.

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Patricia and Brad and thanks them for enhancing the community.

We have the pleasure of presenting Patricia and Brad with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $75 gift certificate from the WOW Award sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company

January 2008

WOW WinnerLori and Mark Yerex
Middle River Terrace Homeowner Association, District 2

Community Appearance Board member Greg Stuart nominated Lori and Mark Yerex’s property for the January WOW Award.

Lori and Mark purchased a typical 1956 South Florida ranch home in the Middle River Terrace neighborhood and discovered many Far Eastern elements hidden in the basic structure of the house.

The new homeowners set out to recast the home starting with the front yard. Respecting the traditionally square lines of this home, Lori and Mark designed a Zen-inspired space, bringing out the boxy elements of the house with more organic shapes of bamboo, white pea gravel, river rock, grasses and papyrus.

Lori and Mark carried the Far Eastern influence over into the interior of the home. They revitalized the interior by honing the terrazzo floors to a high gloss finish, repairing the exposed beamed ceiling, and restoring the simple lines of the interior.

This typical 1956 ranch was uniquely transformed and makes the passer by say “WOW.”

The Fort Lauderdale City Commission and the Community Appearance Board proudly present the WOW Award to Lori and Mark and thanks them for enhancing the community.

We have the pleasure of presenting Lori and Mark with a certificate of appreciation from the City Commission, and a $75 gift certificate from the WOW Award sponsor, Causeway Lumber Company.
